I was exploring on the idea of Social Identity and Authenticity where the “African-print fabric” becomes an allegory to comment on the complex nature of identity. The fabric’s history; its origin, production, designs, consumers, usage, representation and its brands create a narrative of mixed identity and authenticity.
[TEXTS/ ALPHABETS/NUMERALS] have become [signs and symbols] = [codes] which form the basis of written and spoken languages. They connect to the actual images they represent. Therefore, to me, they form part of an imagined community which accepts and rejects members based on their [literacy].
My work is a fusion of different clips from different places in the Kumasi Central Market. The clips are arranged in a way that, it would be difficult to focus on one clip. The various clips form one video which is projected and is made to rotate on a rotating disc. There are two rotating videos. One moves in a clockwise motion whiles the other moves in an anti-clockwise motion.
I mounted five paints that formed one united piece. In between the paintings are painted backgrounds that helps to unite the canvas paintings and the background to form that united piece.
I believe there’s definitely a relation between what is “in front” and what is “behind”
